*BAGHDAD - Police in Baghdad recovered the bodies of 40 unidentified people, most shot and tortured and apparently the victims of death squads, in the 24 hours to Thursday evening, a police source said.

*BAGHDAD - A mortar round exploded in the Ur district of northeastern Baghdad, killing one person and wounding four, police said.

*BAGHDAD - An Iraqi soldier was killed and were three wounded in a clash with gunmen in the Yarmouk district of western Baghdad, a police source said. Officials at the Defence Ministry were not immediately available for comment.

BAGHDAD - A roadside bomb exploded near a U.S. patrol northwest of Baghdad, killing one soldier and wounding three, the U.S. military said in a statement.

BAGHDAD - A car bomb killed 26 people and wounded 64 in a shopping district in the Karrada district of central Baghdad, police said.

BAGHDAD - One person was killed and 13 were wounded by a car bomb in Mureidi market in Sadr City, a Shi'ite stronghold in northeastern Baghdad, a police source said.

BAGHDAD - Two rockets hit the international Green Zone in Baghdad, prompting alarms to sound and warnings urging people to take cover. The U.S. military said six people had been wounded, five of them slightly, but little damage was caused to buildings.

GARMA - U.S. forces arrested 12 suspected insurgents in the town of Garma, near Falluja, 50 km (35 miles) west of Baghdad, the U.S. military said.

MOSUL - U.S. forces arrested a suspect they said was a foreign fighter facilitator with ties to a senior al Qaeda leader responsible for bringing large numbers of suicide bombers into Iraq in the city of Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) north of Baghdad, the U.S. military said.

TAL AFAR - A suicide car bomber blew himself up near a U.S. military patrol and wounded four civilians in the town of Tal Afar, 420 km (260 miles) northwest of Baghdad, police said.

FALLUJA - A motorcycle exploded near a high school and killed a boy and an elderly woman in Falluja, police said.

NEAR MOSUL - Gunmen killed Hussein Abdul Aziz, a member of the city council of al-Gayara, a town near Mosul, police said.

MOSUL - The bodies of two people were found shot dead in the city of Mosul, police said.

HASWA - Several mortar rounds landed in a residential district and killed a man and wounded a girl on Wednesday in the town of Haswa, south of Baghdad, police said.

NEAR HASWA - Gunmen wounded two people on Wednesday near Haswa, police said.

BAGHDAD - U.S. forces and Iraqi police captured five members of an illegally armed militia and detained seven others on Wednesday south of Baghdad, the U.S. military said.

BAGHDAD - At least four people were killed and 20 wounded when a motorcycle blew up in a market in Baghdad, police said.

BAGHDAD - Three people were killed and 10 wounded in a roadside bomb in Baya'a district in west Baghdad, police said.

DUJAIL - Police found two bodies shot in the head in the streets of Dujail, 90 km (55 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.
