Mortar Attack in Central Baghdad Kills Iraqi

July 27, 2004

Baghdad, Iraq: Insurgents fired at least one mortar round in central Baghdad early Tuesday, killing an Iraqi civilian and wounding another, police at the scene said.

The mortar landed in a residential area near the ``Green Zone'' compound which houses the interim Iraqi government and the U.S. embassy, a target of repeated guerrilla attacks.

Several cars were damaged and a wall was pockmarked by shrapnel, Reuters television pictures showed.

``It's not right, young men are being killed every day. For what?'' wailed one elderly woman at the scene. It was unclear if she was a relative of the dead man, whose body was covered by a sheet.

The mortar round was one of several loud blasts that echoed across Baghdad early Tuesday.

A U.S. military spokesman said he had no immediate comment.
Mortars have often been fired at the Green Zone compound in recent months and queues of vehicles awaiting security checks at its entrances have been attacked by suicide car bombs.

Monday, insurgents fired several mortar rounds in the center of Baghdad, wounding one person. Other attacks Monday across Iraq, including car bombings and assassinations, killed eight people
