Various cultural and sports events will take place in Ha Noi from Oct. 4-10 to mark the International Elderly People's Day (Oct. 1).

These events are aimed at honouring the elderly Vietnamese people's contributions to the country's development.

On this occasion, a fine art exhibition will also open from Sept. 29 to Oct. 9 to display 59 paintings by 49 aged members of the Viet Nam Fine Arts Association.

Viet Nam now has over 6 million elderly people, accounting for 7.5 percent of the population. The country's elderly experienced resistance wars and made great contributions to the struggle for national liberation. Many of them are heroes, parents of war invalids and fallen combatants and have held positions of great responsibility in the Communist Party and State agencies.

In the economic arena, many elderly people participate in agricultural production and help the young preserve and develop traditional craft occupations.

The elderly are also actively join scientific, literature and arts research.

In each family, the elderly set good examples for the young to follow, giving their descendants lessons in maintaining family traditions, filial piety, and sibling solidarity.

Many elderly people are also joining municipal areas' activities to help ensure political security and social order.

The elderly treasure traditional culture including legends, folk tales and songs, traditional opera, water pupetry, traditional games and dishes. This treasure is Viet Nam 's birthright and should be bequeathed to younger generations.

The Party and State have offered preferential policies to the elderly and issued regulations, stipulating the community's responsibilty to them.

The Viet Nam Elderly Association was founded on May 10, 1995 , contributing to the expansion and strength of the national unity. A series of emulation movements were launched among the eldery nationwide.

Localities have made it easier for the elderly to contribute their experiences to local socio-economic development, poverty reduction, and hunger elimination. Local officials have built sanatoriums and sport areas and mark birthday anniversaries for the elderly.
