Elderly of the year award to be held in September
Malta Independent, August
5, 2003
|
The
award for the elderly of the year will keep its annual appointment and
will be held next September, Francis Agius, the parliamentary secretary
for the elderly, said yesterday.
Malta -
The first day of October is dedicated to the elderly throughout the world,
and the activities organised by the parliamentary secretariat will reach
their peak on 27 September.
Dr Agius explained that the social policy ministry set up this award as a
recognition to an elderly person who would have been considered as an
inspirational model for other elderly people.
It is important to instil an awareness that everybody, including the
elderly, participated in the creation of a better life, a society built on
interdependence and solidarity among the generations where elderly people
are integrated in all sectors of society.
The parliamentary secretary urged voluntary organisations and local
councils to nominate elderly people for the prize to show their
appreciation and recognition for the voluntary work that was taking place
in society.
Dr Agius said all Maltese citizens, both male and female, who reach
pension age by the end of this year can be nominated for the award. A
board chaired by Professor Joe Pirotta has been set up to choose the
elderly person of the year.
Nominations for the prize will be received by Friday 29 August at noon.
Further information and nomination forms can be picked up from the social
policy ministry and the Gozo ministry.
