UK: Village for Elderly Gets
Green Light May 28, 2003 UK - A
ground-breaking scheme to create a £15 million "pensioners'
village" providing 150 sheltered homes for frail or elderly people in
the heart of Lichfield has been given the go-ahead by councillors. The
development in Lower Sandford Street will include a gym, jacuzzi and steam
room as well as a bar, restaurant, village hall, general store and
hairdressing salon. Lichfield
District Council's planning committee last night approved the scheme by
city housing association HomeZone. The council
will provide £4 million of the funding and HomeZone will raise the
remaining £11 million. The village
will allow residents to live independently but care teams will be on hand
to provide 24-hour assistance. It will
comprise two and three storey apartment buildings, with 60 homes to rent,
18 for shared ownership and the rest for outright sale. Work will
start next year and it is scheduled to open in 2006. In a report to
the committee's meeting last night, planning officer Jo Lancaster said:
"It is considered that the principle of providing accommodation for
elderly people on this site is acceptable. "The
provision of an associated community village would increase the range of
facilities available within the locality. "Car
ownership levels are expected to be low and no adverse traffic impacts are
expected." Copyright
