Assisted Living Facility Planned for Tribe

ABC News

July 28, 2004

Indian Island: Plans are under way for elders of Maine's Penobscot Nation to have an assisted-living facility, so they don't have to leave Indian Island if they can no longer live independently.

The assisted-living building will be erected near the Indian Island Elementary School. Officials say staff members will work with Indian Island Health Services or medical care providers to care for the residents.

Craig Sanborn, the Indian Island Housing Authority director, says the project is the result of a long-term strategic plan studying the needs of tribal members.

He says in the past two years, three elders have had to leave the island reservation, because they no longer could care for themselves.
