Presidential Commission On Public Services Pension Schemes Inaugurated

August 4, 2004

Accra , Aug. 4, GNA - President John Agyekum Kufuor on Wednesday stressed the need for a new Pension Scheme that would be appreciated by Ghanaian workers.

"We all want to retire on sustainable incomes that would make us comfortable in our old age we, therefore, need to find a new scheme all of us would appreciate", he said.

President Kufuor made the call when administering the oaths of office and secrecy to the nine-member Presidential Commission on Public Service Pension Schemes at the Castle, Osu.

The Chairman of the Commission is Mr T.A. Bediako, former Secretary-General of Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and Private Consultant in Labour Relations.

President Kufuor said there could not be any sustainable Pension Scheme without better salaries and wages; therefore, to move away for the current low salaries and wages, we need to take a comprehensive look at the salaries and wages.

"Ghanaian workers are demanding that better conditions are given for respectable retirement. We hope you will come out with recommendations to the Government on what should be done."

Mr Bediako on behalf of the members said it was an honour and a challenge to the Commission to work out a suitable scheme for workers on retirement, those about to retire and those entering into retirement. He said the Commission would need the support and assistance of the Ministers, Ministries, civil society, workers organisations and other stakeholders, who would directly or indirectly be affected by such a scheme.

Mr Bediako pledged that the Commission would come out with a report that would stand the test of time for the Ghanaian worker.

Other members of the Commission are; Ms. Josephine Amoah, Commissioner, National Insurance Commission; Mr Austin Gamey, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Gamey and Gamey Academy of Mediation and former National Democratic Congress (NDC) Deputy Minister of Manpower Development and Mr Martin Esson Benjamin, Chairman, Ghana Brewery Limited and Member of Ghana Investment Advisory Council.

The rest are; Chief Adam, former Managing Director of Electricity Company of Ghana; Mr Andrew K. Asamoah, former Director of Human Resources, WHO, Geneva; Captain Joel K. Sowu, Retired Army Officer; Mr Daniel Aidoo Mensah, former Managing Director of Metropolitan Insurance and Mrs I.M.A. Wontumi, a Retired Civil Servant.

Following agitations from Teachers and Civil Servants that they should be placed on CAP 30 Pension Scheme, which had better conditions than the present Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) Pension and the restoration of the End of Service Benefits to them, the President promised to establish a Commission to examine their proposals.
