Minister of State for Defense, Dr. Roland Oritsejafor said his ministry was planning to present a N15 billion supplementary budget before the National Assembly for use to offset the seven months arrears of pension of ex-military personnel in the country.

He told newsmen in his office in Abuja yesterday that N15 billion arose from the July -December 2003 backlog of arrears of the military retirees.

He assured of Federal Government's efforts not to allow accumulation of arrears for military and civilian retirees, noting however that, "The constraint of government is that there are other sectors of the economy equally demanding attention of government."

The minister also disclosed that the Military Pension Board last week paid N4.4 billion to 97,000 military pensioners for the months of June and July 2004.

He further disclosed that his ministry would soon embark on another round of verification/authentication exercise for retired military personnel.

The Minister expressed confidence that when the new contributory pension scheme comes into operation, all the problems encountered by his ministry with regards to military pensions would be a thing of the past.

"The present administration is however, committed to making life more meaningful for both military and civilian retirees. This informed the current contributory pension scheme, which will enable retirees settle down with something meaningful immediately after leaving service.
