Pondicherry, India

July 13, 2004

The Congress government in Pondicherry today announced a Rs 25 hike in the pension given to aged persons and physically challenged persons in the Union Territory.

The old age pension would go up to Rs 225 while that for the physically challenged would be increased to Rs 425, Chief Minister N Rangasamy told the territorial Assembly.

Replying to the two-day debate on the budget for 2004-05 presented by him, Rangasamy said the government would also consider the plea of the members to revive the payment of pension to destitute women.

Responding to a plea from S P Sivakumar (DMK), he said the government would recommend to the Centre to release a postal stamp in honour of the late Union Minister and DMK leader Murasoli Maran.

He said a medical college, sponsored by the territorial government, would be started during 2005-06.

Referring to the sick Swadeshi and Bharathi mills, under the control of National Textile Corporation, he said the government was inclined to take over them. The report of an official-level committee set up to study all aspects of the mills was awaited.

Rangasamy, who also announced that a jetty would be set up at the port here at a cost of Rs 100 crore, said he had prepared the budget in keeping with the guidance and advice of AICC president Sonia Gandhi.
