November 14, 2005

Total government expenditure on social security benefits during the first nine months of 2005 increased by Lm8.1 million over the same period in 2004 according to a study by the National Statistics Office (NSO). The pensions in respect of retirement increased by Lm5.1 million, mainly due to an increase of Lm4.5 million in the two-thirds pension. This increase was brought about by a net increase in the number of beneficiaries. Other increases within the contributory benefits category were reported in the national minimum invalidity pension which increased by Lm0.5 million and in the survivor's (in respect of widowhood) pension which increased by Lm0.7 million. On the other hand there was a decline in unemployment benefits by Lm0.2 million and in special unemployment benefits which decreased by Lm0.1 million. The outlay on sickness benefits went up by Lm0.2 million. When analysed on its own, the third quarter of 2005 registered an increase of Lm1.5 million when compared to the third quarter of the previous year. Government's expenditure on social benefits for the first nine months of 2005 made up 77.3 percent of the annual budgeted forecast of Lm211.6 million.
