  Many worried about pensions: poll

The Japan Times, April 1, 2002

More than three out of every four Japanese have fears about the future, with many especially concerned about their pensions, Dentsu Inc. said in a recent survey report.

The major advertising agency said it conducted the poll in February on 681 people aged between 18 and 74, excluding students, living in the Tokyo metropolitan area.

The poll shows that 75.8 percent of the respondents have fears about the future. Of these, 47.7 percent said they are afraid they may not be able to receive a sufficient pension, followed by 40.7 percent who are worried about their health. The respondents were allowed to give multiple reasons for their anxieties about the future.

The poll also found only 8.8 percent believed that economic conditions would improve, while 50.4 percent said they would continue to deteriorate.

It is the first time since December 1997 that more than half of the respondents to one of its polls anticipated deterioration in the economy, Dentsu said.
