- Interview with Caroline Njuki, the
United Methodist Church
In English: Interview with
Caroline Njuki, Assistant Secretary General
with the General Board of Global Ministries
Caroline Njuki was born and grew up in
Uganda. She believes that any human rights
convention must require and enforce active
monitoring and implementation of the human
rights it “protects.” In Uganda many older
women are “run out of the village” as a way to
seize their property. She urges that the
UN and its various human rights provision
must monitor what’s going on at the local level
– neglect, killings, and other targeting of
older persons. Poverty lies at the heart
of this situation. She describes how older
women become separated from family as their
children migrate to other countries or move to
other regions of Uganda or Africa. Dr.
Njuki urges a pro-active stance on aging as the
best approach for all.

Caroline Njuki est née et a grandi en
Ouganda. Elle estime que toute convention de
droits de l’homme doit exiger et mettre en place
une surveillance active des droits qu'elle
"protège". En Ouganda de nombreuses
femmes âgées sont "expulsées
du village" afin que d’autres puissent s'emparer
de leurs biens. Elle demande instamment que
l'ONU et ses divers instruments concernant les
droits de l’homme surveillent ce qu’il se passe
au niveau local - la maltraitance, les meurtres,
et les autres attaques ciblant les personnes
âgées. La pauvreté est au
cœur de cette situation. Elle décrit
comment les femmes âgées sont
séparées de leur famille lorsque
leurs enfants migrent vers d'autres pays ou
s’installent dans d'autres régions
d'Ouganda ou d'Afrique. Dr Njuki exhorte une
position pro-active sur le vieillissement, car
c’est pour elle la meilleure approche pour tous.

Caroline Njuki nació y creció en
Uganda. Ella cree que cualquier
Convención de los derechos humanos debe
exigir e imponer una vigilancia activa y una
aplicación de los derechos humanos que
"protege". En Uganda, muchas mujeres
mayores son "expulsadas fuera de la aldea" como
una forma de apoderarse de sus bienes.

Кэролайн Нжуки родилась и выросла в Уганде. Она
считает, что любое соглашение о правах человека
должно включать в себя требование и
порядок наблюдения за их выполнением. В Уганде
многих пожилых женщин «гонят из
деревень», для того, чтобы впоследствии
получить их собственность. Кэролайн призывает к
тому, чтобы ООН и положения о правах человека
следили за тем, что происходит на местном уровне
– небрежное отношение, убийства и прочие случаи
притеснения пожилых людей. Бедность – одна из
главных проблем в этой ситуации. Она описывает,
как пожилые женщины остаются вдали от семьи,
когда их дети переезжают в другие страны или
области Уганды и Африки. Доктор Нжуки считает,
что лучший подход в отношении проблем старения –
это активное участие в их разрешении.

ولدت كارولين نجوكي ونشأ في أوغندا. إنها تعتقد أن
