Helping Elderly Flood Victims

By Andy Hirsch, www.wnep.com

July 6, 2006

Two Columbia/Montour Area Agency on Aging care managers checked in on Louise Babb, 73, Thursday afternoon. Floodwater rushed through her home in Bloomsburg last week. They wrecked just about everything on the first floor.

"I didn't expect it...because a lot of people don't do that," Babb said. "They don't check on other people."

Working their way down a list agency employees are going door-to-door and checking on about 2000 seniors. The try to hook them up with whatever help they may need.

"We can connect them to the Red Cross. Or if they need clothing the Salvation Army. Whatever is out there, we can connect them to. Make sure they're getting the service they need," said care manager Sherry Wright.

Before pounding the pavement the agency tried calling people to check in but that wasn't working.

"Everybody was saying they were okay. But then we found out that there were people that weren't okay," Wright added.

One homeowner in Montour Township had water in her basement and mold was already starting to grow. Guess what she first told the agency workers.

"She said everything was fine, she was under control. Well she's not under control. She's got the black mold growing and now we need to get a group in to get it cleaned up for her," care manager Sharon Beck said. "We're out here to help people and it's frustrating because we can't always do the job we want to do. So when we come across something that we can get a success in, that's always a good feeling."

If you or someone you know is 60 or older and could use some help you can call the Columbia/Montour Area Agency on Aging at (570)784-9272.
