State Doesn't Reveal Criminal History of Nursing Home Workers

Iowa State officials say hundreds of people have been authorized to work at
Iowa nursing homes even though they've been accused of abuse or criminal acts.
But their identities remain secret because of state confidentiality laws.
Even the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals -- which regulates nursing homes-- can't get access to information about the workers that's held by the Department of Human Services.
One former state legislator who advocates for the elderly says it's -- quote -- "unconscionable."
D-H-S officials say people with histories of abuse or criminal acts are only approved to act as caregivers if they follow restrictions intended to protect residents. Many are only allowed to act while being supervised.
But no state agencies are charged with enforcing the restrictions.
