Governor M. Jodi Rell was at the West Hartford Senior Center on Tuesday, July 26 to sign a bill that will move the Connecticut Commission on Aging from the executive branch of the state government to the legislative branch.
The bill was passed for administrative purposes as well as to help expand the commission's membership and allow the legislative leaders from both parties to each name two new members to the commission.
"Connecticut is leading the way in the nation with long term care for its elderly citizens and when we have the opportunity to do something that will further help our senior citizens, we have the opportunity to help enhance everyone's lives," Rell said during Tuesday's ceremony. "This bill will not only expand the membership of the Commission on Aging, it will also bring more helping hands, accountability and responsibility to the commission and I want to thank all of the people who have given their support to it."
"This bill will help make the Commission on Aging stronger and more independent so that they will be better able to assess the needs of our senior citizens and develop ways to meet those needs," state Sen. Jonathan Harris of West Hartford said. "By beefing up the membership of the commission we will be giving a voice to more people and that will only help make the quality of life better for all senior citizens."
Harris, who is co-chairman of the Commission on Aging, introduced the bill.
