Providing a Christmas for the Elderly

By Ashil Kimenker, NBC News

December 6, 2007

This time of year, a lot of organizations make sure to host fundraisers that benefit area children to provide them with a memorable Christmas. But there is a whole other generation that needs just as much help to get into the holiday spirit.

Who knew a bake sale could do so much?

Denise Watson, Hillcrest Haven Activities Director: "Every bit of it goes to the residents. I will start Monday morning and I will start shopping for them."

Around Christmas time, you see the fundraisers that benefit children everywhere you go. At Hillcrest Haven, they do what they can for the elderly, because they say too often they go forgotten.

Denise Watson: "Some of our residents do not have family and so we kind of go out of our way to make sure that everybody gets something."

Hillcrest Haven hosts a bake sale every year and all the proceeds go to the residents' Christmas fund. They bake goodies like cinnamon rolls, fudge, cookies, breads, and a wide range of chocolates for a bake sale. Their goal is to make sure the residents know they aren't forgotten and are cared about.

"I wish you could see their faces. Their faces light up, smiles, ohh and the oohs and ahhs of the gifts they get."

Providing holiday spirit one piece of chocolate at a time.

The bake sale starts Thursday at 9 a.m. up at Hillcrest Haven. They say they are going to stay open until all the food is gone.

Other nursing homes in the southeast Idaho experience the same thing every year around this time. If you would like to help or donate, contact your closest nursing home.
