Program to help seniors beat heat 170 fans donated at Mandeville store By
Teddie Shriner Times
Picayune, July 20, 2003 The
summer temperatures in southern Louisiana can be dangerous, especially for
older people living without air conditioning. The Council on Aging of St.
Tammany is beginning its annual effort to provide fans for seniors who
qualify for the program. COAST recently held a fan drive at the Kmart in Mandeville to collect and distribute fans for people in the St. Tammany and Washington parishes area. Council on Aging representative
Mary Toti of Slidell said the agency started the program last year with 50
fans that they were able to give to their clients. Toti said they had hoped to
double that number this year, with the help of several corporate partners.
They exceeded that goal, collecting more than 170 fans for the cause. The area where COAST volunteers
collected fans was festooned with banners from participants. Blair Kullman, known as
Blair-on-the-Air on WTKL 95.7 radio, handed shoppers T-shirts as an
incentive to buy a fan to donate. Danny Schaus, Cleco's director
of governmental affairs for St. Tammany and Washington parishes, was on
hand to offer energy saving tips. "We consider this such an
important undertaking," Schaus said. "Many of our older
customers have no air conditioning and the fans are vital to keeping them
cool." The fans were taken to the
COAST offices, where they will be distributed. Anyone who missed the
occasion may still take part in the fan drive. COAST will continue to
accept fans or donations to buy fans. For information, call 892-0377
