Man Nabbed in Push-In Robberies

The New York Daily News, March 5, 1999

Cops have nabbed an ex-con suspected of preying on the elderly in the Bronx by pushing his way into their apartments and robbing them at knifepoint, police said.

Clarence Jones, 49, who was on parole until two weeks ago for a 1980 rape and robbery, is accused of robbing at least 14 senior citizens in the Parkchester Complex, said Detective Robert Nugent of the 43rd Precinct. The youngest victim was 85, the oldest, 94, Nugent said.

"In one case, he hit a woman over the head with a vase. Others have suffered bruising and swelling," Nugent said. "Our fear was that he was going to hurt somebody and possibly kill them."

The robber struck on Wednesday, stealing $300 from an elderly woman at 1560 Metropolitan Ave. but fast-thinking cops — Officers Mark O'Connell and Ali Naghizadeh — heard a description of him over the radio and grabbed the suspect after a short foot chase, Nugent said.

He said Jones usually followed his victims home from shopping centers. His crimes have netted him jewelry and $4,000 in cash, cops said.
