New Sexual Education Program Launched for Seniors

NCOA, September 28, 1998

WASHINGTON, Sept. 28, 1998 – The National Council on the Aging (NCOA) today announced the launch of a new educational program, Love & Life: A Healthy Approach to Sex for Older Adults.

This program, developed to increase understanding among older adults that a healthy sex life is a natural part of aging and that sexual dysfunction is not inevitable, helps dispel myths about what defines normal sexuality among seniors. The program is supported by an unrestricted educational grant from Pfizer Inc.

"The Love & Life program is designed to educate the older adult population on sexuality as a person ages," said Glendale Johnson, Assistant Vice President of Membership of The National Council on the Aging.

"There is no expiration date on intimacy. Sexuality is an important and enjoyable part of peoples lives, throughout life, and this program helps to better define the role it plays through the years."

Love & Life is a turnkey program, available to senior centers and other constituent groups nationwide, that provides educational and promotional materials for center coordinators and directors to run onsite sexuality workshops for older adults.

The Love & Life program kit includes a coordinator’s guide, video and all printed materials required to run the program. Topics explored in the program include:

Sex: A natural part of your life: Brochure designed to educate older adults and their partners about sexuality and explores attitudes about sexuality and sexual practices.

Sexual challenges and solutions: Brochure designed to educate older adults about sexual dysfunction, chronic disease, and the aging process.

Talking to your doctor about sex: Brochure designed to generate effective conversation between patients and physicians.

Health risk assessment profile: Self-guided survey for patients to complete and bring to their physicians for discussion.

"We are encouraged by the strong response Love & Life is already receiving. Our hope is that this program corrects many misconceptions about how sexuality is affected by age and enhances relationships among seniors," Johnson said.

"Due to the increased aging population and social advancements in the U.S., we expect the Love & Life program to be one of the most popular of the more than ten educational programs we offer."
