Nurseries in nursing homes

By: Global Ideas Bank

The Emily Jackson House nursing home for the elderly in Sevenoaks has a Montessori nursery for preschool children on the top floor and runs a programme of activities to integrate the children and the residents.

It is the prototype for a scheme that may be introduced in many of the nursing homes run by Westminster Health Care, a private health company.

'The children and residents congregate in the residents' dining hall for music and motion sessions'

The intergenerational facility was developed by Roz Ward, the matron of Emily Jackson House. Twice a week, the children visit the residents on their way to the garden; and once a fortnight the children and residents congregate in the residents' dining hall for music and motion sessions.

70-year-old Rose Bresnahan, confined to a wheelchair by a stroke, goes up to the nursery twice a week to help the children in the classroom. "I don't see my grandchildren as often as I'd like to," says Rose, "and working with the children makes me feel I'm still connected to the real world."

Three of the 24 children have relatives in the home.
