Polite Thief Preys on Elderly

By: Bill Egbert
The New York Daily News, February 19, 1999

Seven elderly Queens women have fallen victim to a charming thief, and police are asking the public's help in tracking the smooth talker down.

The robber, neatly dressed and smiling, knocks on the woman's apartment door and claims to be a downstairs neighbor, police said. He says a leak from the bathroom is coming into his apartment.

When the victim invites him in to check the leak, he grabs her purse or any valuables near the door and flees, police said.

The seven robberies occurred Jan. 11 to Feb. 16 between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. in Forest Hills and Rego Park.

Police have released a sketch of the suspect, described as a white male, 25 to 30 years old, 5-feet-6 to 5-feet-10 with a medium build. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS.
