10 Year Project on Aging to be Launched
ISLAMABAD, July 27 (PNS): In line with the international plan of action on aging, ministry of women development, social welfare and special education will shortly be launching a 10 year project on aging in Pakistan in collaboration with United Nations Fund for Population Activities, UNFPA. The international plan of action on aging recognizes that persons, as they age, should enjoy a life of fulfillment, health, security and active participation in economic social, cultural and political life of their societies. It also recognizes the importance of placing aging in development agendas as well as strategies for the eradication of poverty among senior citizens and in seeking to achieve their full participation in the global economy. The first phase of the decade long project is being funded by the UNFPA with an aim to create the foundation for making a sound policy and to development strategies for meeting needs of older population along with developing a national policy for elderly. Orientation of policy makers academics, NGOs and medical and Para medical is also envisaged in this phase. The activities of second and third phase would inch de-establishment of geriatric units in teaching hospitals, setting up resource centers for the elderly at district level with a provision of training of Home-care providers supply of devices like hearing aids, and ensuring an active participation of elderly in social and economic activity as well as social security and poverty prevention. On the initiative of ministry of women development, social welfare and special education, PIA has set up separate counters for senior citizens at the major airports and its reservation centers, ministry of railways is also considering similar measures. Ministry of health has directed all federal government health establishment and provincial health departments to set up separate counters for senior citizens, State Bank of Pakistan ahs already issued a circular to all public sector financial institutions to ensure extension of special assistance and due care to senior citizens and disabled persons.Copyright
