The National Council for Senior Citizens is busy making plans for this year's observance of senior citizens' month, which will span two weeks and not the usual seven days.
The month of September is observed nationally as senior citizens' month and according to executive director of the national council Beverly Hall-Taylor, the theme for this year's celebration is "Senior Citizens Building Solid Families". It is based on the United Nations 10th Anniversary of the International Year of the Family.
The celebrations will culminate with a national week, which lasts from September 26 to October 3. The week will kick off with an ecumenical and thanksgiving service, which will also be held to observe National Grandparents Day.
Additionally, Jamaica has been invited for the first time to participate in the regional athletic seniors game in Barbados from September 25 to 26.
According to Hall-Taylor, the extra week of celebrations has been added because of increased support. She explained that parishes have been regionalised into four groups, with each set observing a week within their grouping.
As part of this year's celebrations, a national award ceremony will be held to recognise senior citizens who have entered various competitions during the year. These range from caring programmes to agricultural projects. With the society's over 600 clubs islandwide, there was no shortage of activities, Hall-Taylor said.
