The Department of Social Development has called on families and other organizations in the community to stand up and fight against elderly abuse.

The department made this call last week after it had intervened to rescue two elderly people who had been abused by those close to them.

According to the department, one had been physically abused while the other had been living on a pavement.

However, the two have now been taken to a home of safety.

"We are still looking for suitable family members of these people because we still believe that the place for them is with their families," said spokesperson Gcobani Maswana.

"Old people are our wisdom, history, heritage and economic development. They must be treated with dignity and respect as they fought in this democracy by sacrificing their sons, who died while fighting for democracy.

He said in the next financial year, the department would intensify efforts to ensure no elderly person was psychologically, physically and sexually abused.

"We will be ensuring that families are strong to report these cases and we will empower them on how to love elderly people," he said.
