Elderly People to be Paid Allowance

November 8, 2004

Increasing the tax threshold from $7500 to $8840 from next year will greatly assist low-income earners, says Fiji Council of Social Services executive director Hassan Khan.

He said many who did not earn enough would be relieved of the burden of paying tax on income.

The change means that more than 3700 people will no longer be taxed on income.

Mr Khan commended the reintroduction of dependent allowances.

"It is good to see that after making submissions for the past ten years, the $200 allowance each for two elderly dependents has been allowed," he said.

"The priority given to the development of social enterprises such as small and micro-finance business, rural development and poverty eradication are steps in the right direction," said Mr Khan.

Finance Minister Ratu Jone Kubuabola said that as part of revenue measures and tax administration, the Government will increase the income tax threshold from $7500 to $8840 next year.

"This is being done to help care for our elderly and senior citizens.

"Allowance for dependents will be reintroduced next year for up to two elderly dependents of any one taxpayer," he said.
