Aunty Squad Helps Out For A Small Fee

A group of Pasir Ris housewives have banded together to do their neighbours' chores for a fee that will be used partly to help team members develop new skills.
The 25 members of Aunty and Aunties Unlimited want full-time, stay-at-home mothers in Pasir Ris Zones 12 to 14 to join them to offer services such as ironing, marketing or to look after the elderly and infants when their family members cannot care for them.
The idea came to Jenny Tan, a draftsman turned housewife, when she was talking to other residents in her neighbourhood.
The aunties charge S$2 (RM4.40) for every piece of clothing ironed and S$10 (RM22) an hour for housekeeping services.
The money goes into a kitty, with a cut for the aunties and the rest going into teaching the squad skills in gift-wrapping and corsage-making.
The Community Development and Sports Ministry shared Tan's vision: This project was one of 22 proposals to clinch funding from the ministry's S$2.4mil (RM5.3mil) Social Enterprise Fund, set up last year to help non-profit bodies sustain their projects by awarding seed money and professional expertise.
