February 11, 2004

According to a new report published by the Brookdale Institute of the Joint Distribution Committee, 20% of Israeli old people suffer from hunger.

The report, which was carried out at President Moshe Katzav's initiative, will be delivered to the president today.

Other statistics from the report: A third of the elderly suffer from cold in the winter due to an inability to afford air conditioning; one out of every five old persons cannot afford a telephone or public transportation.

Minister of Labor and Social Welfare Zevulun Orlev has called an emergency meeting of the directors in his ministry and the heads of the National Insurance Institute to discuss the JDC report.
