80-Year-Old Marries Mentally Challenged Woman
Indo-Asian News
June 30, 2004
An 80-year-old grandfather in a Jharkhand village has married a 22-year-old mentally challenged woman -- and the couple is living happily despite opposition from the family.
Affluent Ayodhya Sah of Makari village in Garwah district, 140 km from here, got married last week perhaps out of sheer loneliness and to get someone to take care of him.
The woman is from a poor family and her parents consented after Sah assured them that he would take care of her, said a police official present at the marriage ceremony.
Though Sah's family, most of whose members stay in the Chhattisgarh capital Raipur, opposed the wedding, the villagers have reportedly accepted the obviously mismatched couple.
Sah lives alone in the village and the woman cooks and looks after him.
