National Front Patrol For Elderly

A pledge by the National Front to look out for the interests of the elderly is failing to impress Age Concern.

The right-wing group wants to start patrolling streets in areas known to have high crime rates in an effort to protect vulnerable members of the community, including the elderly.

It plans to begin the patrols in Christchurch and eventually introduce them throughout New Zealand.

But Age Concern president Terry Potroz says that while many elderly people living alone do feel vulnerable, they do not need the sort of help on offer from the group.

She recommends the elderly join their local Neighbourhood Watch group instead.

Christchurch Mayor Garry Moore is also against the move. He says the latest statistics show crime has actually reduced nationwide, so there is no need for such patrols.

He believes the offer amounts to electioneering on the part of National Front head Kyle Chapman, who is contesting the Christchurch mayoralty.
