HA NOI - Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh spoke highly on Wednesday of retired teachers, medical doctors and scientists for their continued devotion to the younger generations.
At a speech on Wednesday to a delegation of the Viet Nam Association of the Elderly in Ha Noi, Manh said the retired professionals have made important contributions to promoting education, public health care and business by providing classes, medical checks-up and technical consultations for the poor free-of-charge.
The meeting's participants at the Party Central Committee's Head Office included retirees who excelled in the fields of education and training, public health care, science and technology, and who remain well-known for their voluntary spirit.
Viet Nam Association of the Elderly called the Ha Noi conference in order to praise the dedication of those elderly people who showed commitment to Viet Nam's continued development.
Party leader Manh said he was impressed with the association's emulation movement, which had last year called attention to old people's excellent business practices, which helped to reduce poverty.
He said he was glad to see that many retired teachers continued to teach evening classes for helping to eradicate adult illiteracy and to teach orphans and street children.
He said thousands of retired medical doctors had become famous for promoting village health care networks by opening village dispensaries and providing medical check-ups to poor farmers and children.
Meanwhile, retired scientists were praised for their continued participation in research projects and for helping to spread advanced technology to agricultural communities.
The Party leader said the efforts of the elderly community led the Party to continue regarding the older generation as one deserving of praise. The elderly, he said, had become indispensable to the nation's continued development.
He urged the relevant ministries and sectors to pay more attention to the elderly by co-operating with the association to encourage more old people to participate in Viet Nam's development.
