Namibe, Angola

October 6, 2004

A workshop on the retrieval of the dignity of the elderly is taking place today in Namibe, Angola's southwest, jointly sponsored by the provincial Government and local departments of the Ministries of the Social Welfare and Ex-combatants and War Veterans.

The meeting aims at contributing for a definition of a national policy on the elderly, creating technical and human conditions for the elderly and ensuring security and tranquillity for the target group.

The event is also intended to secure the access of the elderly to basic health care and ensure major attention to the problems affecting the elderly.

The workshop, the first of its kind in the province, is to tackle such topics as "The elderly in the society", "Culture and legislation", "Family and institution" and "Sports and education."

Two panels will be set up to discuss the topics, leading to a plenary session and final conclusions.

Attending the meeting are private and state firms directors and representatives of NGO's and churches.
