No Early Retirement of Women Workers

Bahrain government has once again rejected a demand of parliamentarians to implement early retirement of female workers because of the high cost of the proposal.
The cabinet in a letter, a copy of which was obtained by Khaleej Times, said that the optional early retirement for working women would cost the government an average of BD64 million annually, if only 50 per cent of the 4,166 employees who could benefit from the proposal opt to go for it.
The proposal that was passed by the parliament early this year has been submitted at least three times since 2002 by conservative MPs and has been rejected by the government for its high cost and various other reasons.
According to the proposal women who want to take early retirement would be treated on a par with those retiring for sickness or superannuation and that might cost the Pension Fund BD33.2 million in the first four years of the implementation of the
programme.
