FOUR HUNDRED AND THIRTY-TWO AND COUNTING.
This is how many signatures the National Assistance Board's welfare officer, James Cummins, had collected by mid-day yesterday from Barbadians concerned about elderly abuse.
Speaking to the DAILY NATION just outside the entrance to Super Centre, Warrens, St Michael, Cummins said the petition, one of the activities for September, which is being observed as the Month of the Elderly, would assist the department in getting support for long awaited legislation on elderly abuse.
Legal framework
"What we are trying to do is to develop some sort of support so that the Ministry of Social Transformation can prepare some sort of legal framework to protect the elderly against abuse in Barbados," Cummins said.
"There is some legislation for children and there is some for the disabled, but there is absolutely nothing for elderly persons within Barbados, and we are really trying to promote this within the context of Barbados."
Speaking in the absence of official statistics, Cummins said the department was aware of the psychological and financial abuse that befell some seniors.
Some were tricked out of their pensions and property while others were the victims of physical and sexual abuse, he said.
Cummins said the team would move to Sheraton Centre, Christ Church, on Thursday and the City next week.
