Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika is spearheading a campaign to assist the elderly citizens in the country and says he will strive through his Bingu Silver Grey Foundation to raise funds for them.

Speaking at New State House Thursday when he met the organizing committee of the Bingu Silver Grey Foundation Charity Golf Tournament, the President made a rallying call to Malawians to assist the elderly saying reports indicates that many of them were financially suffering.

He mentioned a 112 years old woman from Ntcheu district in the central Malawi, Maria Ntang'andira looking after a year old orphaned toddler.
"What struck me most was when she told me that her granddaughter had just passed away and had left behind a one year old baby which she had to look after. Now how can she manage to do that," said Mutharika.

The President’s Foundation has organised a one day fundraising golf tournament at Blantyre Sports Club on Saturday to help the elderly. The President will tee off the tournament.

"I am pleased with what is going to happen on Saturday. The Golf tournament does not only emphasize the need to raise funds for the elderly but it is also a means of making people know about the Silver Grey Foundation," said Mutharika.

According to Kelvin M’mangitsa, chairman for the Fund Raising Committee they have raised around K7.3 million so far from National Bank, Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA), Air Malawi Soche Tours and the Taiwanese Embassy.
