Philippines

A haven for the elderly will soon rise in Pasay City to take care of the abused, homeless, and neglected senior citizens.

Based on record at the Office of Senior Affairs (OSCA), the city has recorded 45,000 elderly but only 22,000 are active in city government’s projects designed for their welfare and protection.

OSCA head, Janet Protacio, said that of the total number of senior citizens in the city, about 10 percent are homeless and they are found roaming the city particularly along Taft Avenue and Libertad Street.

Protacio observed that the elderly, after they were rescued by members of the city’s Social Welfare and Development Office and turned over to their families, go back again to the street allegedly claiming they were abused and neglected and they have also received reports of six abused elderly by their respective families.

The OSCA chief added that based on the testimonies of the six abused elderly they wanted to be confined at the center where they can be taken care off and to be able to get back their pension ATM cards.

Protacio said that some of them claimed that they have no money to buy medicines or food because their families have confiscated their pension ATM card for their personal use.
