To all AGE members
Dear members,
For action:
We need your help to lobby your MEPs to support the Buitenweg report on equal treatment
The European Parliament is holding its plenary vote on Wednesday 1 April on Kathalijne Buitenweg MEP’s Report on the proposed EU Directive on the principle of equal treatment for the grounds of age, disability, religion/belief and sexual orientation.
The adoption of this legislation by the European Council is an indispensable pre-condition to address the discrimination that older people experience in your country and across the rest of the EU. The support of the European Parliament will send a strong signal to the European Council that citizens call for EU legislation to ban the discrimination they face on the grounds of age, disability, religion/belief and sexual orientation.
AGE is concerned to learn that the European People’s Party (EPP) has tabled an amendment rejecting the whole report. We therefore urge you to strongly encourage your MEPs, in particular EPP MEPs, to go and vote to:
- Send a strong political message to Member States about the importance of this legislation by voting in favour of the report.
- Support all amendments that will ensure this legislation truly protects against age discrimination, including the new recital amendment proposed by Liz Lynne MEP that defines medical data in Article 2.7.
Please find attached a template letter for you to adapt and the amendments put forward by the European anti-discrimination networks.
If you have any questions, please contact Rachel Buchanan, Policy Officer for Employment and Non-discrimination at rachel.buchanan@age-platfrom,org or on 00 32 2 280 1470.
Many thanks for your support.
Kind regards,
