Occupational Therapy:
Russia and Kyrgyzstan

By: Departement for International Development - Britain - Russia Partnership

“The purpose of the project is to train up to forty people from Kyrgyzstan in Occupational Therapy ….and to develop the new profession of Occupational Therapist (rehabilitation worker) and to provide a centre for training people for this profession…. The Trust and Association [Social Workers Association – Russia] would promote the manufacture of small items … to allow the employment of people with disabilities.

“The final component will be to help the trainees to gather their skills to train others…” (From the RET – Application)

An important result of the major TACIS Social Services project has been a growing interest at senior levels of the Russian Government in occupational therapy, a previously unknown discipline in Russia. The RET has launched a number of projects in this area for Moscow, the regions and Kyrgyzstan and there are more in the pipeline.
