A 74-year-old woman is seriously ill in hospital after she was stabbed at her home.

Police are treating the attack on Winifred Murray in Warrington, Cheshire, as attempted murder.

The pensioner was stabbed several times and is in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

Cheshire Police are warning women in the area to be vigilant, and to avoid going out alone at night.

Witness appeal

The attacker struck at around midnight on Monday at the pensioner's home in Troutbeck Avenue in Bewsey.

The man was white, and aged between 16 and 25. He was wearing a red striped t-shirt, with no collar.

Cheshire Police say women in the area should be on their guard, and report anything suspicious.

Police want to speak to anyone who may have seen the attacker late on Monday evening, or in the early hours of Tuesday.
