Thieves Strike at Bavdha Again

By: Rahul Chandawarkar
Times of India, July 23, 2002

THIEVES have come back to torment the residents of Ramnagar colony, Bavdhan, again. With as many as three back-to-back thefts in the last one month, the woes of the mostly senior citizens of the colony continues.

The basic problem centers around the fact that despite the colony being in Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) limits, they continue to be serviced by the Pune rural police, with its outpost in Paud village - 30 kms away.

Readers will recall (PT, Sep 26, 2001) how this colony, a mix of multiple small societies, had been hit by three thefts in 15 days last year.

The present policing arrangement is ridiculous, considering that the Paud village police take three hours to reach the site of the crime.

Villi Ragi’s home in the Rustic Dale society of Ramnagar colony was the latest to be burgled on the night of July 16, 2002. Amal Bannerjee, her neighbor, had to make five phone calls to get to the police.

It is obvious that the Pune city police would provide better service to the over-populated Bavdhan area than the rural police.

Ranjitsingh Sharma, city police commissioner, had told PT in December 2001 (PT, Dec 7) that he would definitely include Bavdhan and 47 other villages in his latest proposal to the state government when asking for six new police stations.

However, seven months down the line, Sharma says that Bavdhan is now not part of this much-hyped proposal.

“Our proposal only asks for six new police stations to bifurcate the existing police stations that have become unmanageable. Bavdhan is not part of this plan,” Sharma told PT on Monday.

Sadly, an April 2000 proposal sent by the Pune rural police to the state government suggesting that 47 villages including Bavdhan be passed to Pune city police is still gathering dust.
