Retirement and Relationship
from the Marriage Files

By Jane Glenn Haas, The Orange County Register

October 18, 2006

Are you a Superwoman trying to "re-engineer" your recently retired husband?

As a couple, how do you create a "partnership marriage" after dual careers?

Are you sharing and caring?

In Japan, retirement cuts off men from longtime office social networks, leaving them virtually friendless. Japanese wives say they feel like they become servants. They develop physical ailments that psychiatrists diagnose as stress-related "retired husband syndrome."

American psychologists say the same symptoms are being noted here.

We are looking for some couples where the husband recently retired. We want to tell how both spouses are dealing with their new relationship.

Or maybe not dealing. More than 60 percent of divorces after age 50 are said to be initiated by wives suffering from some form of "retired husband syndrome."

To share your successes and challenges, contact Jane Glenn Haas at The Orange County Register, P.O. Box 11626 , Santa Ana , CA 92711 or e-mail jhaas@ocregister.com.
