Caregivers at Eight Bay Area Nursing Homes Protest Resident Conditions

The Californian

July 29, 2008

Nursing home workers at Windsor Skyline Care Center and Windsor Ridge Care Center will hold a joint demonstration today asking their employer to make needed improvements in resident safety.

Salinas City Councilmember Sergio Sanchez, Democratic Assembly nominee Bill Monning, nursing home workers, SEIU United Healthcare Workers-West, and community allies will take part in the rally at 3:30 p.m. today at Windsor Skyline Care Center, 348 Iris Drive, Salinas. The protest will be held simultaneously at eight Bay Area nursing homes operated by Windsor Healthcare.

In 2006, the two homes made Windsor owners more than $2 million in net profit, according to the union.

Since July 2007, more than 360 violations of health and safety regulations were documented at Windsor Healthcare nursing homes through federal surveys, the union said. In addition, it said, 58 patient complaints ranging from short-staffing to fire hazards were substantiated by the Department of Health and Human Services during the same time period.

In contract negotiations that have lasted for more than a year, nursing home workers – represented by SEIU United Healthcare Workers-West – said they have proposed various ways to help ensure quality resident care by reducing staff turnover and establishing an employee training and education fund. The group says bargaining has been unsuccessful so far.
