Program Aims to Help Seniors with Drug Costs

News-Leader

February 19, 2008

Missouri Attorney Gen. Jay Nixon is expected to be in Springfield today to announce a grant program to help seniors obtain free or reduced-cost prescriptions.

Nixon plans to talk about the program at 11 a.m. at the South Side Senior Center, 2215 S. Fremont Ave., according to a news release from his office.

Nixon's office will provide $630,000 in technology grants to help local health organizations coordinate people's applications for free and low-cost prescriptions through drug programs offered by pharmaceutical manufacturers, the news release said.

Nixon, who is running unopposed as Democratic candidate for governor, will be joined by representatives of area agencies that help seniors and provide health services.

Hundreds of thousands of Missourians, many of them seniors, have difficulty paying for prescription drugs, the news release said. The program Nixon is announcing will help coordinate their needs with nearly 200 programs from pharmaceutical companies that offer free or reduced-cost drugs.
