More Elderly Suffer from Brain Injuries

Cases of brain injury among the elderly have increased nearly 60 percent in 15 years, according to a study published in the Finnish Medical Journal.
However, an increase in the number of senior citizens is not sufficient to account for the change. The number of seniors over the age of 70 has risen by 30 percent in the past 15 years.
Brain damage among the elderly is caused mostly by falls and accidents in the home. The study suggests that injuries can be prevented by the use of studded shoes and slip-proof mats under rugs and in shower areas, and by keeping passages and corridors clear.
Researchers say the increase in brain injuries among elderly are worrisome, particularly because they require much longer care than younger people.
