The risk of undernourishment is generally higher in nursing homes, at the houses of women and in houses of people who are 90 years old and above.

“Undernourishment is not fatal but we must be aware of it. The elderly, along with their families, neighbours and doctors must remain observant,” said Professor A. Van Gossum of the Belgium Society of Nutrition Clinics linked to the Erasmus university hospital.

Over 5000 elderly people aged over 70 years took part in the undernourishment tests carried out by NutriAction last November. 975 of these took part via their GP and 4359 were from nursing and care homes.
