N.D.P.
Says Hospital Waiting Lists Caused by Fees for Seniors Halifax Daily News July 21, 2003 Canada
- HALIFAX (CP) - Nova Scotia's N.D.P. say the easiest way to end hospital
bed waiting lists would be to stop the practise of making seniors pay for
medical care in nursing homes. New
Democrat leader Darrell Dexter says seniors are taking up valuable and
expensive hospital bed space, while they wait to get into long-term care. He
says they're forced to wait while the government assesses how much they
can pay towards their medical care in nursing homes. The
N.D.P. claim some long-term care beds are going empty because of the
bottleneck. Dexter
says removing the draconian fees and the assessment process means seniors
can go directly to nursing homes. That,
he says, would take the strain off the hospital system. Dexter
pointed to the annual report of the Queen Elizabeth Two Health Sciences
Centre, which he says supports his claim. However,
the report does not specifically blame the assessment system for the
backlog. Dexter says if an N.D.P. government is elected on August 5th, it will do away with the assessment and fees. Copyright
