Retired, Elderly Get Drug Aid From Rotary

Daily Trust, May 14, 2003

Abuja - The Rotary club of Lagos has donated drugs worth about N75,000 to the Nigerian Society for the Welfare of the Retired and Elderly Persons (NISWREP).

Making the donation, President of the Club, Rotarian Hakeem Akinlade, said the essence of the donation was to create a precedence for other individuals and corporate bodies who may want to follow suit.

According to Akinlade, the donation was the first instalment to NISWREP whose general welfare should be the concern of every Nigerian and the government.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, treasurer of NISWREP, Mr. Lare Fatiregun said the organisation was formed to take care of the basic needs of the old especially as it concerns their health.

Fatiregun stressed that the health of the elderly has to be taken care of, adding that they need more healthcare than they have now.

He maintained that the government has the responsibility of giving adequate attention to the welfare of the elderly, especially those who cannot do anything serious for a living.

The treasurer expressed profound gratitude to the gesture of the Rotary club for having the interest of the aged at heart.

He however said they are looking forward to receiving more of such aid from public spirited Nigerians and corporate bodies.
