DTC Staffer Told to Take Care of 90-Yr Old Mother

The Times of India, July 7, 2002

Munni Dwarka (90), who was first thrown out by her sons and then forcibly evicted from an old age home in Patel Nagar, has finally found a home. On Saturday, the legal aid services directed her younger son to take her home. Om Prakash, a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) employee lives in Rohini.

He contended his mother left home on her own. But Dwarka told legal aids services secretary Kamlesh Kumar Prakash had been ill-treating her and had thrown her out. Kumar also asked the old age home to pay back the Rs 25,000 that she had deposited with them.

The station house officer of the area was also asked to visit Prakash twice a week and submit a report to the court once a month. On June 15, metropolitan magistrate Kamini Lau had directed the police to ensure that Dwarka was safe at the old age home. The order was passed after the elderly woman approached the court for help.

According to Dwarka, she was thrown out by the old age home in Patel Nagar where she moved in after her sons refused to keep her. She was not permitted to enter the home though she had paid Rs 25,000 to the caretaker. She had also spent Rs 1,400 to repair her room’s door.

Dwarka, however, did not accept the harassment silently. When the local police and the deputy commissioner of police (DCP) west Delhi did not pay heed to her requests, she approached the court.

Dwarka expressed her desire to stay with her eldest son who works in the army. She claimed the old age home in-charge and one of the assistants had started harassing her a year back.
