Airport Assistance

By: John Vietenz
The New York Times, February 17, 2002

To the Editor: Regarding "Airlines Help Kids Flying Solo" (Practical Traveler, Feb. 3) and "Catering to the Elderly Can Pay Off," (Money & Business section, Seniority column, Feb. 3):My mother has the time and the money to travel, but will no longer fly unaccompanied. She does not need assistance on the plane, or getting to or from the airport, but she does require assistance in the terminal. The confusion of security, check- ins, gate assignments, and especially the transfer between one airline's Gate A1 and another's Gate Z99 is more than she will attempt to tackle by herself.

Can the airlines expand their kids- flying-solo procedures? Can the old red cap terminal services be expanded to provide this needed assistance (and still maintain security)? Until then, a portion of the potential travel market will stay home and wait for their children to come visit them.
