Bahrain - A BD600,000 community medical centre for the elderly is
to be constructed in Salmaniya. The project comes as a donation from Ebrahim Khalil Kanoo Group. Health Under-Secretary Dr Aziz Hamza signed an agreement for the
new project with E K Kanoo president Moha-mmed Kanoo. The ceremony at the Health Ministry complex, in Salmaniya, was
attended by group vice-president Fuad Kanoo, senior Health Ministry
officials and representatives of Mohammed Salahu-ddin Consulting
Engineering Bureau (MSCEB), the project consultants. The 44-bed geriatric block with out-patients facilities will be
constructed on the vacant land behind Salmaniya Medical Complex, next to
the Joslin Diabetic Centre. It will be known as Ebrahim Khalil Kanoo Community Medical Centre. The project will consist of a two-storey building with six general
wards, three for males and three for females with 22 beds each, private
rooms, recreation halls, consultation rooms, laboratory, pharmacy and
medical records section. Other facilities are administration offices,
kitchen, cafeteria, laundry, meeting room, reception and waiting areas and
prayer rooms. Dr Hamza, who thanked the E K Kanoo Group, said the project would
serve the needs of geriatric patients within the Manama community. "The out-patient unit will provide the best care for the
elderly," he told the GDN. "The centre will also conduct house calls for the elderly and
will provide ambulance service facility by the Health Ministry. "The project is expected to create more than 50 jobs for
Bahrainis." Dr Hamza said such projects are vital for Bahrain, where the number
of the elderly population is on a steady increase. Mr Kanoo said he was proud to donate such a project to the people
of Bahrain in memory of his late father Ebrahim Khalil Kanoo. "Old people currently make use of the services of the
Geriatric Hospital units located in Muharraq," he said. "We hope the new project will prove a boon to the elderly
population living in the Manama area." MSCEB managing director Moha-mmed Salahuddin said the project is
currently in the design development stage. "Tendering will be in November, and construction is expected
to start in the beginning of next year, for completion in 12 months,"
he said. The total built-up area is 2,100 square metres and the plot area is
9,850 square metres. "In
addition to the civil and architectural works, the scope of works includes
a central air-conditioning system, electrical and mechanical services,
water and drainage units, and information and communication systems,"
said Mr Salahuddin. Copyright
