Lagos
State Plans to Undertake Census of Pensioners By Olumide Bajulaiye, Daily Trust (Abuja) September 9, 2003
The Lagos State
government has set up a committee charged with the responsibility of
verifying the claims and payment of pensioners salaries for the next three
months. The public
relations officer, Lagos state civil service pension office, ministry of
economic planning and budget, Mr. Jide Lawal announced the new initiative
in a statement issued yesterday. Lawal said
the verification exercise would be held on September 22 and 26, October 12
and 13 and November 3, and 2 respectively. According to
him, the results of each verification exercise would be used to update the
state government pensions records for payment in the subsequent month,
just as the yearly pension verification exercise would be fashioned along
the same pattern. He explained
that available statistics indicate that a large number of the yet-to-be
verified pensioners fall into the category of pensioners resident outside
the state. He therefore,
disclosed that a register had been opened in the office of the permanent
secretary, civil service pension office, for relatives of pensioners'
resident outside the country with a view to obtaining relevant information
on the pensioners pending when a definite policy would be made on such
category of pensioners by the state government. Copyright
